Can CBD Support Men Going Through Prostate Cancer? Here’s What the Research Says

When facing a prostate cancer diagnosis, most men are quickly thrust into a world of unfamiliar medical terms, treatment options, and side effects. While traditional cancer treatments like surgery, radiotherapy, or hormone therapy are often effective, they can take a toll - both physically and emotionally. So it's no surprise that many cancer patients begin exploring natural ways to support their wellbeing during treatment. And one option that’s getting more attention is CBD.

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a natural, non-psychoactive compound found in the hemp and cannabis plants. You’ve probably heard it mentioned in conversations about stress, sleep, or joint pain - but now researchers are also exploring the role of cannabis extract in cancer care, especially when it comes to prostate cancer. Could it help? Could it ease the journey for those going through treatment? While many open questions remain, a new scientific review offers some early insights.

Let’s take a closer look at what the research says - without hype or false hope.

What Was Studied: A Global Review of CBD and Prostate Cancer

A 2025 scientific review set out to answer a simple but powerful question: What do we really know about the effect of cannabinoids like CBD and prostate cancer?

To find out, researchers examined twelve studies from around the world—Italy, South Africa, China, Sweden, Australia, and beyond. Most of these studies focused on how CBD interacts with prostate cancer cell lines in the lab. Others looked at how patients responded to CBD supplements in clinical trials. The researchers wanted to understand two main things:

  1. Could CBD help slow down or stop cancer cells from growing?

  2. Could the cannabinoid improve the quality of life for prostate cancer patients - helping with pain, sleep, emotional health, or overall wellbeing?

While the answers are still evolving, what they found was intriguing.

The Lab Results: How CBD Affects Cancer Cells

Let’s start with the lab studies. In these experiments, scientists worked with prostate cancer cells - some sensitive to hormones, others more aggressive and treatment-resistant. They added different forms of cannabinoids, including CBD, to see what would happen.

Across the board, CBD appeared to slow the growth of cancer cells. In many cases, the cannabinoid also encouraged those cells to die off naturally - a process known as apoptosis. Some studies showed that CBD might even disrupt the energy systems inside the cells, making it harder for tumours to thrive. Others found that CBD could interfere with signals that encourage cancer cells to spread.

One study went a step further. Researchers combined CBD with common chemotherapy drugs like cisplatin and docetaxel. The result? The combination worked better than either one alone. This suggests that CBD might one day be used to boost the effectiveness of existing treatments - though so far, this has only been shown in lab models with cancer cells, not in real people.

Still, the message is clear: scientists are uncovering interesting ways that CBD interacts with cancer biology. It doesn’t mean the cannabinoid is a cure - but it could be part of a more holistic picture in the future.

What About Real People? A Small Human Trial Offers Clues

Of course, what happens in a petri dish doesn’t always happen in the human body. That’s why it’s important to look at actual clinical studies, too.

So far, there’s been only one formal trial looking at CBD for men with prostate cancer. In this study, men who had previously completed treatment, but still had rising PSA levels, were given a daily dose of pharmaceutical-grade CBD (known as Epidiolex). The aim wasn’t to replace standard prostate cancer care, but to explore whether CBD was safe and whether it offered any benefits.

The results were modest. The CBD was well tolerated - meaning no serious side effects - and most men in the trial had stable disease during the study period.

Pain Relief and Quality of Life: Still More Questions Than Answers

A lot of people turn to CBD hoping it might ease pain, improve sleep, or help them feel more like themselves again. So what did the review say about that?

Unfortunately, most of the reviewed studies looked at cancer biology - how CBD affects tumours, not how it affects the person living with cancer. The one clinical study that did track symptoms found that patients had slightly better sleep and emotional wellbeing while taking CBD, but the improvements were small. Pain scores didn’t change significantly.

This doesn’t mean CBD isn’t helpful. It just means we don’t have enough evidence yet to say one way or the other. More trials that include real-life symptoms, rather than just lab markers, are urgently needed.

How CBD Works in the Body

So why might CBD be helpful at all?

It comes down to a system in the body you’ve probably never heard of: the endocannabinoid system (ECS). This is a complex network of receptors that help regulate things like pain, mood, inflammation, and even how cells grow and die.

CBD doesn’t bind strongly to these receptors the way THC (the psychoactive compound in cannabis) does, but the cannabinoid still influences the system. Scientists believe it may help calm inflammation, reduce oxidative stress (a kind of cellular wear and tear), and gently balance the body’s response to stress or damage.

In the context of prostate cancer, that could mean helping the body cope better with the effects of treatment. It could also mean improving things like sleep, mood, and resilience - important areas that often get overlooked in a clinical context.

Choosing a Quality CBD Product

If you or someone you care about is considering CBD, here are a few important things to keep in mind:

  • Pick a trusted brand: Look for products that are third-party tested and clearly labelled. You want to know exactly what’s in your CBD - and what’s not.

  • Start low and slow: Everyone reacts differently to CBD. Start with a small dose and increase gradually if needed.

  • Speak to a healthcare professional: Especially if you’re on other medications or undergoing treatment, it's always best to check first.

Remember: while CBD is widely used as a wellness supplement, it’s still important to approach it thoughtfully!

Why CBD Might Play a Role in Men’s Health

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men in many countries. It’s also a condition that affects not just the body, but the mind, identity, and relationships. Many men find it hard to talk about how they’re feeling or ask for help with side effects like anxiety, insomnia, and fatigue.

This is where CBD might offer something unique. It doesn’t just target one symptom. Instead, it works across multiple systems - potentially helping with the overall experience of recovery. That doesn’t make it a cure, but it does make it a compelling area of interest, especially for those looking for some natural support.

And as science continues to explore these possibilities, it’s likely that CBD, and the use of cannabis and cannabinoids in general, will play a growing role in the future of supportive cancer care.

Final Thoughts: Cannabinoids in Cancer

The new research on CBD and prostate cancer is encouraging, but it’s also early days. So far, studies suggest that CBD might help slow cancer growth in lab models with cancer cells and possibly enhance the effects of certain chemotherapy drugs. In real people, CBD appears safe and well-tolerated, with some hints of benefit to wellbeing.

But the key takeaway? We need more research! Especially studies that focus on how people feel, not just what happens to their cells. Because sometimes, the smallest shifts like better sleep, a calmer mood, a little more energy - can make a big difference.
