CBD, Cats and Separation Anxiety
If you're a cat owner, you're probably well familiar with the range of emotions our feline friends can express. From the joyful purrs greeting you at the door to the painful meows when you leave. It's clear: cats form deep attachments to their owners (or should we say servants?). But what can we do when separation becomes too stressful for them? Interestingly, CBD - a compound from hemp - might just be the answer!
Not Just for Humans Anymore
CBD has been making waves in the wellness world for its science-backed beneficial effects on issues such as anxiety, chronic pain and more. But did you know that cats - just like us humans and other animals like dogs - have an endocannabinoid system that CBD can interact with? This similarity has sparked curiosity about how CBD could benefit our furry friends.
Can CBD Keep Cats Calm?
A recent study set out to explore CBD's effects on separation anxiety in domestic cats. Ten healthy, neutered male cats and their owners participated in this unique trial. For a duration of two weeks the animals received either CBD oil or a placebo (sunflower oil) before being briefly separated from their humans. The researchers took note of how the cats reacted during the reunion. They categorised the animal’s behaviour: did they seek comfort through physical contact? Stayed close without touching? Or displayed any avoidant behaviour?
Surprising Results
The findings were crystal clear! The cats receiving CBD showed a noticeable difference in their behaviour compared to those getting the placebo. With CBD the cats were less inclined to cling to their caregivers (an overreaction) or avoid them in spite. Instead they were more likely to stay close and exhibiting what's known among animal experts as the "Secure Base Effect" (SBE). This behaviour suggests that CBD helped to reduce the cats' distress during separation and made them feel more secure - even in their human’s temporary absence.
Beyond the Science
This study is more than just an interesting read for cat lovers! It shows the potential of CBD as a natural solution to improve the wellbeing of our pets. Anxiety - especially when it comes to separation - can manifest in many undesirable and unhealthy ways. It can affect your best friend’s behaviour, health and the household's harmony. Hemp extracts could open up a new, non-invasive avenue for pet care that's definitely worth exploring further!
A Word of Caution
Now before you consider CBD for your cat: it's important to remember that research is still in its early stages! The cats in this study were closely monitored by professionals to ensure their health and wellbeing remained intact. CBD products for pets are becoming more available and heavily advertised - but we strongly suggest consulting with a veterinarian before trying CBD. They can provide guidance tailored to your cat's specific needs and health status.
Looking Ahead
The findings from this study add to the growing body of evidence supporting CBD's therapeutic effects. It's an exciting time for pet owners that are looking for natural solutions to common issues like separation anxiety. Who knows? CBD might just be the key to a happier, calmer kitty waiting to greet you at the door.
